Profile Products Launches $9 Million Expansion Following Major Acquisitions and Enhancements

Expansion is the latest in growth that includes numerous acquisitions, state-of-the-art facilities and elevated sustainability standards

Profile® Products today announced the start of a game-changing $9 million manufacturing expansion project, an important investment that will provide a significant increase in capacity, improved logistics and enhanced safety and quality systems for Profile’s sustainable product lines. This is the latest in a long chain of initiatives to further strengthen the company’s position as a leader in soil and vegetation management solutions, horticultural substrates and professional turf and sports field management.

“We are continually looking for ways to elevate the industries we serve through our innovative products, state-of-the-art facilities and educational initiatives,” said Jim Tanner, president and CEO of Profile Products. “This expansion is a continuation of our commitment to meet our customers’ needs and exceed their expectations by providing the best solutions for their environment.”

In 2019, Profile added a second fiber processing plant in Conover, North Carolina, which doubled plant capacity, created ultramodern greenhouses and added new fiber processing technologies. Since then, the company has grown significantly with the acquisitions of HydroStraw, a manufacturer of straw-based erosion control products, and Sunterra Horticulture, a leading sphagnum peat moss producer.

The new investments will add significantly more fiber processing capacity, high-tech packaging and modern warehousing in both its North Carolina and Rockford, Washington facilities. Additionally, Profile will continue to invest in its leadership position in environmental stewardship by expanding several programs that prioritize using the highest recycled-content products available to its respective industries, including packaging. Profile has also eliminated more than 3.5 billion pounds of wood and paper from the waste stream and productively returned it to the environment.

“When businesses choose to employ Profile products, they’re choosing to put the environment first,” Tanner said. “We are proud to see more and more companies recognize the value of green design engineering, and our expansion will help to meet that growing demand.”

To help industry professionals understand the value of green design engineering and the effectiveness of the company’s hydraulically applied products, Profile has completed more than 1,200 lunch and learns in the past two years. Topics of lunch and learns include Profile’s latest forward-thinking product, ProGanics® DUAL Biotic Soil + Erosion Control among others. These educational initiatives have been a key part of Profile’s commitment to the industry.

The expansion projects will be completed throughout the next year. These investments are part of Profile’s strategic growth plan.

Profile Products Expands Horticulture Business with Acquisition of Sphagnum Peat Moss Producer Sunterra Horticulture

The acquisition brings together two leading experts in advanced growing media substrates to reliably provide critical raw materials to growers and blenders.

Profile® Products, the manufacturer of HydraFiber® horticulture substrates and other leading soil and vegetation management solutions, today announced the acquisition of Sunterra Horticulture, a major producer of professional-grade sphagnum peat moss. The transaction includes all Sunterra product lines, as well as the company’s state-of-the-art facilities in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada. All Sunterra employees will also join Profile’s team.

The investment combines the industry-leading experience of both companies and expands Profile’s horticultural product line to provide growers and blenders with a consistent and reliable supply of critical raw materials needed for their soil and media programs.

“We’re excited to merge two of the most innovative players in the horticulture substrate market,” said Jim Tanner, president and CEO of Profile Products. “Sunterra not only provides high-quality peat moss in North America, they also have an excellent team and modern facilities that complement our production.”

The new products augment Profile’s rapidly growing horticulture line, including HydraFiber, the most advanced engineered substrate for consistency, porosity and water availability. The acquisition will allow Profile to further enhance its strategic partnership with growers who choose to make their own mixes and blenders looking for a supply chain partner they can rely on for high-quality raw materials.

“Profile Products has established a strong market presence with products that fit well with our portfolio and corporate culture,” said Albert Dorish, president and founder of Sunterra Horticulture. “Through our combined efforts and capabilities, I’m confident we’ll be able to deliver a full range of solutions and services to support customers with their horticultural needs.”

Sunterra joins Profile’s extensive global portfolio, which also includes proven technologies for erosion control, landscaping, sports field conditioning, and golf course construction and maintenance. The transaction closed on December 1, 2020. Financial details were not disclosed.

North Coast Corridor Project Earns Profile’s Green Project Award

The North Coast Corridor Program, a comprehensive set of transportation, environmental and coastal access projects in the North County Region of San Diego, was recently selected as Profile’s Green Project Award winner for its sustainability efforts on the project.

The Green Project Award celebrates the distributor, engineer, contractor and project owner who achieve environmental excellence on projects. The recipient is selected for their focus on sustainable practices and deployment of environmentally superior erosion and sediment control solutions.

This year, the Green Project Award recipients include Stover Seed Company, Pacific Restoration Group, Inc. (PRG), the California Department of Transportation and the prime joint venture contractor FSSW of Flatiron, Skanska, Stacy & Witbeck.

PRG applied Profile’s ProGanics® Biotic Soil Media™ and Flexterra® High Performance-Flexible Growth Medium® on a 5-mile stretch of Interstate 5 as part of the infrastructure improvement project that includes more than 25 miles of road, rail, bicycle and environmental restoration. ProGanics is an environmentally friendly, hydraulically applied biotic soil media that accelerates the development of depleted soils and substrates by providing a patented biological nutrient system with beneficial bacteria and key soil-building components. Flexterra HP-FGM is the industry’s highest performing hydraulically applied erosion control product.

The project also includes replacing and extending the San Elijo Lagoon Highway Bridge to accommodate carpool lanes. Restoration will enhance the lagoon’s wetland and upland areas and help with tidal flow. It also includes beach sand replenishment. A new park and ride/multi-use facility will provide parking for carpools, bike racks, an electric vehicle charging station and recreational access to the San Elijo Lagoon and the North County Bike Trail. The project has an anticipated completion date of 2022.

“The North Coast Corridor Program embodies sustainability from the actual amenities that are being built to the practices they’re using to improve the area,” said Daniel Reynaga, CPESC, QSD, western regional sales manager for Profile Products. “Profile is proud to have a hand in this project by combining our green design engineering approach with eco-friendly products that remove wood and cellulose from the waste stream and naturally enhance the environments where they are applied. We commend the North Coast Corridor Program for putting sustainability at the forefront of this historic project.”
